Where we Fly?

Rebecca Brookhart Fund

When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. ~Author Unknown

In Memory of a Son, Brother, Husband, Pilot, Friend

A letter from Damon's sister, Colleen, about him...
Damon as a little boy

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your great kindness towards our family.  I do not even have words to express our great sadness.   In losing Damon we have lost a Husband, Son, Brother, and Friend.

Damon is the oldest sibling in our family and he is my older brother by 18 months.  He has always been part of my life.  I can clearly remember the times as kids, when we would wait patiently by a large mud puddle with safety pins tied to string and fastened to a stick.  Damon would insist that we were going to catch a fish.  LOL!   We never did...!   There were other times that we would spend whole days patiently stalking birds.  Our mother (apparently in a moment of genius) handed us each a salt shaker and told us that if we could sneak up on a bird and salt his tail he would be to heavy to fly.  The obvious conclusion was that we could then catch the bird and keep him for a pet.  Damon and I were quite adamant that  this would work for us.  We even convinced are younger brother to help us.  The truth be told, I think we tried to use him for bird bait!  It seems like I remember we had seen something about vultures on TV, and we expected that it was a ruse that would lure birds to us.   : )

Damon and I were good buddies when we were little.  I wore his hand-me-downs.  I played with his army trucks.  I hiked with him through the woods to look at the 'absolute-for-real-dinosaur-footprints that he had discovered. The only problems that arose in our play was that I was a girl and therefore when we played 'Army' my brothers always made me be the nurse, which I hated.

I miss my brother.

I wanted to say thank you to all of you for your friendship to my brother.  Ballooning was the one thing besides his wife Susan that made him happy.  It was in his blood. He thought about it, dreamt about it, talked about, and planned for it.

With Hope & Love,
Colleen Nick
ps- I am attaching three photos --one of Damon as a little boy, one of Damon, Wayne and myself with our dog, and one of all 5 of us/it is our infamous 'leaning' pose!  Colleen, Bobbie, Damon,Wayne & Chip.
